How To Get To Bar Harbor Maine

We love our visits to Bar Harbor Maine and Acadia National Park...in fact it's one of our favorites of all our New England Vacations.

Travel To Bar Harbor By Car

We live in Massachusetts, and it usually takes us about 5 hours to get there by car. We take Interstate 95 all the way up through Augusta Maine, and pick up Route 3 towards Belfast Maine, then onto Route 1 in Ellsworth Maine, then back to Route 3 again, into Bar Harbor...simple huh!

If you're planning on driving it'll probably be best if you get specific directions from Map Quest.

Now you may be thinking that 5 hours in a car is too long, or maybe you live farther away and driving just isn't something you want to do.

Well luckily, there are other ways to get there.

Flights into Bar Harbor Airport

The Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (airport code BHB), is about 15 miles from downtown Bar Harbor and 3 miles from Acadia National Park.

US Airways have flights into Bar Harbor airport everyday. They are the only major airline that does. You see, this isn't a very big airport. It's mostly for smaller planes.

And once your at Bar Harbor airport, you'll be able to rent a car from either Hertz Rental or Enterprise Rental.

Or if it's in season, take a ride on the Island Explorer shuttle. It leaves right from the airport and goes to the village centers and Acadia National Park...for free!

Bangor International Airport is another airline you can fly into. It's about an hour away, and most major airlines fly into it from all around the world.

Unfortunately you can't catch a ride on the Island Explorer shuttle, but you can rent a car and then drive onto Bar Harbor.

Take A Cruise Into Bar Harbor

Another way of getting there, is by a Cruise Ship. There are over 70 cruise ships that arrive in Bar Harbor each year.

We're planning on taking a cruise from Boston to Halifax Nova Scotia in 2010, with a stop over in Bar Harbor. I can hardly wait!

If you live in Nova Scotia, Canada, you can take The Cat Ferry into Bar Harbor from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

If you have your own boat, there are many suitable moorings. Check with the Harbormaster’s Office at 207-288-5571
